On the occasions I’ve been lucky enough to meet Rachael Finch, she’s always exuberated a kind of positivity and enthusiasm that you just want to bottle up and have at the ready for times you need a little lift. And hanging out with her at the launch of the L’Oréal Botanicals lavender range was no different – as Rachael circled the room chatting and laughing with every guest in attendance.
Announced as the brand’s new ambassador while lunching at The Botanica in Vaucluse, Sydney late last year, we grabbed a few minutes of Rachael’s time following the meal to chat to her about everything from what makes her thrive to positive mindsets to health rules.
Can you talk me through a usual day in your life?
Every day is different, which I love. I’ve always been a creature of change and I thrive on it. I could be doing anything from traveling, shooting in studio, filming content for my online health and fitness program, working from home, or working on television. Despite this, I love to start every morning the same way – a long glass of water then a walk outside with Simba our dog and Dominic in the pram. We then come home, have breakfast and coffee, and I get in the shower!
How do you juggle being a career woman, a mum, a wife, an influencer, and staying fit and healthy?!
I ensure our plans at home are crystal clear and I have everything thought of. I’m very organised. Of course there are days we switch off and relax, however, I’ve actually planned for those too! I think balance in all activities in life is incredibly important to be the best, most shiny version of ourselves. This means getting a good night’s sleep, eating right, exercising, meditating, spending time with family and friends, and being a part of your wider community.
I feel like this time of year is crazy busy for everybody, so I’m sure it’s absolutely insane for you at the moment. Do you ever feel overwhelmed with all your many commitments?
Sometimes, but very rarely. Because I invest time into looking after myself every day through self-care, I don’t tend to feel too overwhelmed. However, if I do find myself in a bit of a funk – it’s a cue for me to stop, breathe, meditate, and take some time out. That may mean a bath or shower, a long walk, getting a massage, or just relaxing at home. I’ve become good at switching my mindset to create positive thoughts and be grateful for what I have. Stopping to just count your blessings is very powerful.
What do you and Mike like to do to unwind?
Go for a beautiful dinner, to the movies, or we love to travel somewhere warm with a beach to relax!
On your career, how is BOD by Rachael Finch going? How much of your day is spent working on the brand?
Every day we are working away creating new ranges, content and ideas – I love it and wouldn’t have it any other way. We are in the design process for future collections months in advance so we’re always looking to new trends and what’s coming out. I’m wrapping up this year with a B.O.D shoot in Melbourne, which I’m so excited for!
As well as your BOD work, you’re also involved in ambassador work – like why we’re here today!. Can you tell me what drew you to L’Oréal’s Botanicals Fresh Care range?
The ethos of the Botanicals by L’Oréal Paris brand very much aligns with how I aim to live my life. I love that the products and packaging are made from 100% recycled material and are 100% recyclable. All hero ingredients are sustainably sourced and natural in origin. I think it’s very important for global brands to start moving in this eco-conscious direction and I’m so proud to be onboard with such a reputable brand!
What’s your favourite product in the range and why?
Definitely the lavender range. Misha loves it too as he has a sensitive scalp and finds it helps with the dryness. I love the therapeutic benefits and find it hydrates my hair while still allowing bounce and fullness.
Other than hair care, can you talk me through what your everyday beauty regime looks like?
I cleanse and moisturise my face morning and night and once a week I’ll exfoliate in the shower. Every 6-8 weeks I book in for a facial for a deeper clean and for some relaxation! I change my pillowcase every 2-3 days and also take my makeup off with either coconut oil or a light cleansing water.
Before I let you go – I do have to ask you a couple of health questions too… I know you’ve been asked about your Day on A Plate many times, but do you have any health rules that you try to stick to on a regular basis?
Everything in moderation and listen to your own body! Those are the best lessons I’ve learnt along the way. I’m a big believer in bio-individuality – meaning one person’s food is another person’s poison. Just because someone eats a certain way and they thrive doesn’t mean it will work for you. Every time we eat, we are doing research for our body. I love listening and giving my body what it needs every day from all angles – meals/ movement/ mindfulness etc.
What would be your number one cheat meal? And something crazy you like to eat that followers wouldn’t know?
I’m pretty open with my followers about my treat days and everything I like to consume so no secrets unfortunately. My fave is a big bowl of coconut ice cream with choc fudge sauce and a brownie on the side. I make all of this from home which is so easy to do and all from my program!
How many times a week do you try and work out? And what does this look like?
What’s inside my program www.bodybyfinch.com is what I do each week. I like to break up my week of training with strength, flexibility and cardiovascular work. I do my HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) on my balcony or in my lounge room, walk the dog with Dom in the pram every morning and stretch each week. My goal is to sustain my fitness levels long term and remain at a healthy level without being extreme. All of my workouts are 30 minutes or less and involve mostly compound movements that are functional in my day to day life.
And lastly, would you say you are living your dream life?
Without a doubt. I like to always ask the question, “If you had all the money in the world, what then would you do with your time?” For me, it’s exactly what I am doing now.
What’s in store for 2019?
We have some exciting plans for my online health and fitness program, Body by Finch. Our app launches in January then we have some other announcements shortly after. It’s a real dream to work on as it incorporates everything I do in my life on a day to day basis. I love seeing the magical results from women right across the country as they change their life and become happier!
